UT admissions policy back before U.S. Supreme Court next week
Texas is notably absent from the briefs, although California is overwhelmingly present, from state leaders to law school faculty to university student leaders.
The
return of Fisher v University of Texas to the U.S. Supreme Court next
week brings with it staunch support for UT’s so-called “race conscious”
admissions policy from groups like Ivy League universities, the American
Bar Association, National Association of Basketball Coaches
and the ACLU of Texas.
You can
see the dozens of briefs here.
Oral
arguments on the case are scheduled for Dec. 9, its second time before the
court. Back in 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court remanded the Fisher case back to
the 5th
Circuit Court of Appeals to consider what some in higher education circles
might call the Holy Grail: the appropriate tension between racial preference
and equal access in university admission policies.
