Abbott promises to sign the most pro-school choice law filed next session
Abbott even points to school choice as a fix for special ed crisis: “When I visited them about the possibility of school choice, you would see tears on the cheeks of moms….”
Gov. Greg Abbott
agrees the Texas school finance system needs to be fixed, but it’s still
unclear whether public schools will be happy with his proposed solution.
Abbott laid out his vision for the next session in a
roundtable with reporters this afternoon. His most direct statements, however,
were in response to a question on school choice. He said what is best for each
child can vary: traditional school, charter school or even homeschool.
“I think the people who are best positioned to make the
decisions about education are not leaders in Austin, Texas, but the parents of
kids that go to school,” said Abbott, who was then pressed on whether he
supported taxpayer-funded vouchers. “What I believe is I will be interested in
school choice solutions that are offered up, and I would be interested in
signing the most pro-school choice law that arrives on my desk.”
