HHSC asks CMS for temporary reprieve to maintain CHIP program
Technically, the request HHSC has sent to CMS is to retain $90 million of a $190 million balance on the state’s account. That would carry the state through the end of February
The Health
and Human Services Commission has under a month to clear an application
to pick up $90 million the state needs to cover the lapsing Children’s
Health Insurance Program.
CHIP
provides health care coverage for about 400,000 low-income children in Texas.
The
requested redistribution of about $90 million in federal funds, through the Center
of Medicaid and Medicare Services, would push the end of CHIP to the
end of February; thus, giving Congress a chance to
pass legislation that would renew the insurance program.
