Speaker Straus signals strong support for GOP members who stuck with him in fights with Senate

“I’ll be supporting House members who took the high road and did what was right for their districts, and not the low road of wedge politics,” the Speaker said in San Antonio

Texas House Speaker Joe Straus on Tuesday told business leaders in his hometown that the next legislative session could be “the most challenging in decades” and he telegraphed pretty clearly to Republican members who stuck with him in fights with Senate that he will have their backs in primaries in 2018.

“I’ll be supporting House members who took the high road and did what was right for their districts, and not the low road of wedge politics that are out of step with the everyday needs and dreams of our fellow Texans,” Straus said in a speech during a luncheon hosted by the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.

Citing the fight over failed bathroom legislation that business leaders feared would be economically damaging, Straus stressed “now is not the time to walk away from the table.”
