Straus asks HHSC to explain how CHIP can continue uninterrupted given congressional inaction
“Ensuring the program's continuity is a priority of the Texas House,” Straus said
As
nearly a half million kids across the state are set to lose health insurance
after Congress missed a deadline to extend the Children's Health Insurance
Program, or CHIP, Texas House Speaker Joe Straus is asking the Health
and Human Service Commission to explain how the agency ensure
uninterrupted coverage.
“As
you know, without federal reauthorization of the Children's Health Insurance
Program (CHIP) next month, the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is
expected to exhaust all available federal funding to operate its state program
beyond the end of January 2028,” Straus wrote in a letter to HHSC Executive Commissioner
Charles Smith.
