Amid furor over electric Scooters, Texas considers setting a basic framework for safety
Sen. West’s bill setting some baseline safety regulations is moving in the Texas Senate; companies say “There has to be a focus on safety, but it’s also about a level playing field. We don’t want the state to be picking winners and losers.”
Amid
all the uproar over electric scooters like the ones operated by Byrd,
Lime,
Uber,
Lyft,
Ojo and other companies, the Texas Legislature is
considering stepping in with some minimal safety standards. Partially, this
comes as a result of confusion over the rules – or the lack thereof – as they
now stand in communities across the state.
Some
cities have implemented a series of regulations. But, with some calls to ban
these scooters outright from city streets and others embracing them as a
solution to congestion, crafting regulations has proven difficult.
