As she takes the gavel at Public Health, Mrs. T confronts mental health funding head on
“We have the resources and infrastructure, human wise to be able to do this, we just need the financial investment to help us get those breakthroughs,” Chair Thompson said
At Gov. Greg Abbott’s urging, the Texas Legislature is attempting to
tackle the mental health crisis particularly as it relates to schoolkids.
This week, House Bill 10 is set for
a hearing in the Texas House Public Health Committee. The bill would create a Texas
Mental and Behavioral Health Research Institute to focus on increasing
the number of mental and behavioral health care providers for children, rapid
delivery of such care, and mental and behavioral health focused research.
The bill is authored by Chair Senfronia Thompson, D-Houston, who has made it clear
that support for those who suffer with mental health issues will be a top
priority for the committee.
