Battle over short-term rentals starts anew this week at the Capitol
Companies like HomeAway say “these ordinances may intentionally or inadvertently have the effect of banning short-term rentals” while opponents argue cities should be able to tailor regulations to fit their communities
Another local control
battle is about to play out at the Texas Legislature this week, this
time on the question of how much authority cities should have when it comes to regulation
of short-term rental properties.
In response to some
municipalities, such as Austin, banning certain types of short-term rentals in
residential neighborhoods, a group representing renters known as Texans
for Property and Rental Rights was recently launched with an eye toward
preemption.
