Strange bedfellows push for changes to Texas free speech protections
Chair Leach tries to thread the needle as TLR and TTLA come together; some members of the press remain skeptical
The Texas House
Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee heard testimony on proposed
changes to freedom of speech protections under the Texas Citizens
Participation Act today. Despite some confusion about a new version of
the bill, it seemed support was growing for what Chairman Jeff Leach, R-Plano, is trying to do.
A committee substitute for
House Bill 2730 by Leach amends the law which fights efforts to
“silence by suing” by narrowly defining what constitutes “matters of public
concern.”
