Texas House select committee on Mass Violence begins its work

Texans deserve better, Select
House Committee on Mass Violence Prevention and Community Safety
Committee Chairman Drew Darby, R-San Angelo, said in his opening remarks
at its first meeting today.
“My commitment to you is
that we will listen, we will work, and we will engage in a serious
conversation,” he said.
The 13-member committee
was formed in the aftermath of mass shootings in El Paso and Midland/Odessa
between July and August. 28 people were killed.
Department of Public
Safety Director Steve McCraw
and Deputy Director Skylor Hearn served
as resource witnesses. They pointed to Gov. Greg Abbott’s eight
executive orders and a set of legislative proposals aimed at inter-agency
cooperation and additional resources to guide the committee’s work.
