30-day reports will leave political professionals looking for late money in primaries

Health care groups start to circle the wagons for Dr. Sheffield, African-American longtime incumbents in Houston are starting to see the true outlines of their primaries, and Wilks and Dunn narrow their focus in GOP contests

As they trickle into the Texas Ethics Commission database, the 30-day campaign finance reports suggest political professionals will be on the lookout for late money as “hot” primaries – those that warrant such an adjective – enter the homestretch.

As veteran political consultant Reb Wayne tweeted yesterday morning, “These days if you’re in a hot primary you leave your 30 day out report thin (ie less fundraising in January) and then have $$$ come in later to throw the opposition off.”

“By the 8 day out report it doesn’t matter,” Wayne said.

Some donations stand out, however. So, let’s do this.
