As racial tensions rise, Chair Dutton and Councilman Davis battle it out in runoff to represent African-American Texas House district in Houston
Dutton says Gov. Abbott hasn’t reached out to the Legislative Black Caucus for solutions; Councilman Davis criticizes Dutton for being absent when the vote was taken on the Sandra Bland Act
HOUSTON – Despite the global pandemic, quite a
few political candidates in Texas still face a July 14 runoff. They’re in races
facing logistical challenges thanks to the initial spread of COVID-19. They’re also taking place with the backdrop of rising racial
tensions in the wake of the police killing of Houston native George Floyd.
In Texas House District 142 here
in the Bayou City, where Councilman Jerry Davis is challenging Juvenile
Justice and Family Issue Committee Chairman Harold Dutton, their
Democratic runoff was forced amid accusations that the third-place finisher
back in March wasn’t
even a real person.
Nevertheless, Davis and Dutton still have to duke it out.
