Texas ramps up for potential uptick in COVID-19 cases
Of the big state governors, Abbott falls somewhere in the middle on all this so far
Gov. Greg Abbott hosted a COVID-19 update with a
backdrop of donated medical supplies, but he never answered the critical
question: How much more time until Texas is prepared?
The question seems significant because of Pres. Donald
Trump’s response to East and West Coast governors battling COVID-19 in
recent days.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, has
vocally – and frequently – been critical of the Trump White House, especially
in frequent updates during the COVID-19 virus. The latest update? “You pick
24,000 people to die,” Cuomo said here
in an effort to either access a federal stockpile or redirect factory
production of items such as ventilators.
On the West Coast, Gov. Gavin Newsom, also a
Democrat, has his own version of a federal response. Within hours of his
request, Trump granted a
major disaster request on Sunday. Texas made a similar disaster request,
which has yet to receive a
response.
So, where does Abbott fall? Somewhere in the middle, it
appears.
