Without census numbers, Texas Senate digs into redistricting with a look at West Texas
West Texas – that wide
swath of land with cities as different as Lubbock, El Paso and Midland/Odessa –
was the first region up at the virtual Senate Redistricting Committee this
morning, and turnout leaned toward Democrats who feared Census numbers would significantly
undercount Hispanics.
Once-a-decade Census
numbers – which may not arrive until April or May – will be used to redraw both
state and federal maps for representation. Texas, which has added an estimated
4 million residents in this new Census, could be adding another 2 or 3 Congressional
seats, plus shake up a lot of Texas House seats.
Or not.
