Updated: RPT Chair Rinaldi’s announcement to step aside sets the stage for a race to replace him, sparks talk of future plans including a possible bid for AG

The announcement came as no surprise to some GOP sources in Collin County. Meantime, Chair Rinaldi endorsed a former Collin County GOP Chairman to succeed him, but a top Texas House Republican blasted Rinaldi’s preferred candidate is a “total fraud”

Republican Party of Texas Chairman Matt Rinaldi late Friday announced he would not seek another term when the party meets at its convention this summer in San Antonio. The announcement was what some North Texas observers called “the first move” in a coordinated effort to hand pick a successor who was quickly on Friday blasted by a top Texas House Republican as a “total fraud.”

In a news release, Rinaldi gave no indications of future plans, though it is widely thought in Republican circles that he has his eyes on the Texas Attorney General's job if AG Ken Paxton runs for US Senate in 2026. That of course would either be a showdown with Sen. John Cornyn or an open race should Cornyn choose to retire. But that’s drama for another day.

Moments after Rinaldi made his announcement, former Collin County GOP Chairman Abraham George – a frequent critic of Texas House leadership who just unsuccessfully challenged Rep. Candy Noble – announced he would run for RPT Chair, speedily earning endorsements from Rinaldi and Paxton. But, there was pushback as well.
