TMF mulls House run, slams Freedom Caucus for proposal to change speaker election process
"It is also clear that he (Matt Schaefer) is missing a few pages of the Texas Constitution and I would be pleased to give him a tutorial," said Trey Martinez-Fischer
Former
Representative from San Antonio and Democratic firebrand
Trey Martinez-Fischer on Friday said
he’s thinking about running once again for a Texas House seat. In
doing so, he slammed members of the Freedom Caucus, specifically Rep. Matt Schaefer, R-Tyler, for proposing
that the members of the House GOP Caucus select a candidate
for speaker before the full body votes on the issue in 2019.
“I
am convinced that Texans need an effective voice to counter extreme views and
ill-conceived policies,” Martinez-Fischer said. “If Matt Schaefer and the Tea
Party Caucus think they can elect a Speaker by changing the rules, it’s clear
to me that Matt Schaefer doesn’t know the rules,” he said.
“It
is also clear that he is missing a few pages of the Texas Constitution and I
would be pleased to give him a tutorial,” said the longtime guru of Texas House
rules.
“Electing
a Speaker is a right not a rule,” Martinez-Fischer said. “Whenever extremists like
Schaefer have messed with our citizen’s rights, they have found themselves,
repeatedly, on the losing end of litigation in court. I am happy to take the entire Freedom Caucus
there, if they wish.”
