Dallas city charter election comes to a head in fight over drastic changes to DPD and city government
City leaders, police groups, and business interests are concerned about “fiscal chaos” if three of the amendments are passed; right wing donor Monty Bennett is proudly helping lead the charge to make fundamental changes
DALLAS – In
Dallas County, most Capitol observers’ eyes are on the reelection campaigns of Ways
and Means Chair Morgan Meyer and International Affairs and
Economic Development Chair Angie Chen Button, the last two
Republicans to represent Dallas County in the Texas House.
But in the
City of Dallas, a bipartisan coalition of current and former
elected officials, chambers of commerce and police and firefighter associations
are scrambling to defeat three amendments to Dallas’ charter they allege could
cause fiscal chaos.
Propositions
S, T and U are among the 18 charter amendments voters will vote for or against
as part of decennial city charter review process. They are backed by the group Dallas
HERO, a 501(c)4 which met the signature requirements to get the amendments on the ballot.
