Rural GOP lawmakers met with anger during townhall appearances about school vouchers and public education funding
Republican
Texas House lawmakers holding townhall style meetings about
school vouchers and public education funding in their districts were met with
anger from people they represent over the weekend. House Public Education
Committee Chairman Brad Buckley has been touring the state to
appear alongside members in their districts.
It
isn’t going well so far.
Chair
Buckley appeared onstage for a townhall with Rep. Cody Harris in Palestine,
where the crowd’s reaction caused Harris to cut the meeting short and tell them
“Thanks for your time. You’ll never get it again.”
"Unfortunately some in the crowd chose to disrupt the
conversation, turning it into a Palestinian-style protest that drowned out
voices meant to inform, engage, and debate in good faith," Harris said
later on social media.
Buckley
also joined Rep. Helen Kerwin in her Central Texas district for a
similar meeting. The crowd was quite agitated and hit them both with questions
about the proposed small increase in the basic allotment. One woman in the
audience called it a “slap in the face” and said it would “do nothing” to help
public schools that have gone without significant funding increases from the state
since 2019.
