Bipartisan frustration simmers in the Texas House over ISDs not receiving what was promised under sweeping school finance law
During a less than transparent process last year, House members were promised certain amounts for their school districts that aren’t adding up now; “Had I known then what I know now, it might have changed the way I voted on the bill,” said one frustrated Republican
Following
passage of last year’s massive school finance package, Texas House
legislators from both parties are grappling with a complex discussion over a
fairly straightforward question: How can they have passed what was billed as an
“historic” $8.5 billion investment in public schools only to now see ISDs in
their areas not receiving as much as was promised and, in some cases, being
forced to scrape by on reserve funds?
As the Texas
House Public Education Committee engages in a review of House Bill 2,
some very conservative legislators joined with Democrats on Monday in
expressing deep concerns over discrepancies between what was promised and what’s
being delivered.

After dismissing concerns of Rep. McLaughlin, the USDA now confirms case of New World screwworm in South Texas
"Well… maybe we should listen to our state representatives," McLaughlin said
The United
States Department of Agriculture on Wednesday confirmed a case of New World screwworm in South Texas. For the
uninitiated, it’s a parasitic fly that could wreak havoc on the state’s $15
billion cattle industry – not to mention its impact on all other living organisms.
The announcement
comes just one day after Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins had dismissed the concerns of Rep. Don McLaughlin,
R-Uvalde. He raised the issue on social media and in correspondence to other lawmakers.
The freshman Republican from Uvalde County, a former mayor of Uvalde, had said
that the parasite had been detected a mile from the US-Mexico border.

Kronberg argues Paxton comparing himself to a president with 35 percent approval rating might not work out
On Texas Capital Tonight, QR Publisher Harvey Kronberg talked with host James Barragan about the way the general election is shaping up and the fact that Republicans should have all the campaign cash they need for the cycle, especially given Gov. Abbott's fundraising skills

Texas House GOP told in closed-door meeting they face at least a $60 million shortfall in campaign cash
One veteran GOP operative said it’s interesting so many are gathered in Austin rather than a targeted meeting only for those in tight races but added it’s not wrong for Speaker Burrows to sit them down “for a talkin’ to headed into a tough election.” One GOP member grumbled that Abbott could just fund endangered Republicans himself “but he won’t”
Editor’s
note: This story includes some rough language, but it makes the point given the
urgency Texas Republicans feel in this election cycle - SB
“Why don’t
they just get Abbott, Patrick, TLR, and TTLA
to split the bill?”
That’s how
one frustrated Texas House Republican in attendance at a closed-door
summit in Austin put it after they were told by consultants and others that the
GOP Caucus faces up to a $65 million shortfall in fundraising to
be competitive in a national political environment that favors insurgent
Democrats this fall.

Republican Ag Commissioner Miller set to join Democratic nominee for his job for discussion on data centers
GOP Texas
Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller is set to join Democratic nominee
for the job Clayton Tucker down on the coast for a bipartisan discussion
on "large-scale data centers on Texas communities, water resources, and
infrastructure."
Miller of
course just lost the Republican nomination to businessman Nate Sheets,
who had the backing of Gov. Greg Abbott, back in March.
The event
in Bay City will be hosted next Thursday by a group called "Matagorda
County Against Data Centers."
It's being
called "The Cost of Data Centers" and will "bring together
speakers from diverse backgrounds to discuss concerns about the rapid expansion
of AI data centers across Texas, including their effects on water supplies,
power infrastructure, rural communities, and local economies," per the
announcement.
"This
issue is bringing Texans together from all walks of life," Tucker said.
"People may disagree on a lot of things, but they understand that our
water, our land, and our communities should not be sacrificed so a handful of
tech barons can get even richer."

Paxton to meet with President Trump at the White House tonight
The exclusive
reporting from Politico:
Texas
Attorney General and newly-minted Republican Senate
nominee Ken Paxton plans to meet with President Donald Trump at the White House
Tuesday night, according to a person close to Paxton granted anonymity to
discuss the meeting.
It will be
Paxton’s first in-person meeting with the president since clinching his
endorsement and winning the brutal primary runoff against incumbent Sen. John
Cornyn last week.
The White
House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
He’s also
spending time on the Hill, looking to shore up relationships with Republican
lawmakers, many of whom were supportive of Cornyn and skeptical of Paxton’s
candidacy.

Braddock: After winning the US Senate nomination, Paxton now represents the mainstream of the Texas GOP
Increasingly over the last decade, the party’s top nominees aren’t just the products of primaries but of runoffs, pushing the fringe toward the middle. It’s not that different from when then-Sen. McCain chose Gov. Palin for VP; Paxton’s ascendancy fully moves the far right to center stage
PLANO –
Honestly, it was a little hard to think while the 80s and 90s rock was blasting
over the loudspeakers in the event space here at the Marriott at Legacy
Town Center or when a pastor was leading AG Ken Paxton’s congregation
in a prayer that included telling God that Democratic Senate nominee James
Talarico “twists your word and spits on your name."
There was
an enthusiastic and maybe drunken “amen” or two from the crowd paying $18 per mixed
drink.
And who
among us could focus on political analysis amid the spectacle of Roseanne Barr
– wearing a nametag even though she’s by far the most famous person in
attendance – hanging out with a few conservative activists here at the hotel bar
late into the night after most of the GOP faithful had headed home.
But
eventually the hotel emptied out and, by midnight, it
had all quieted down making one thought inescapable.

TDP Chair Scudder backs proposal to call on Texas House Democrats to dump Speaker Burrows in 2026
From a resolution to be debated at the TDP convention in Corpus: “The Democratic members whose votes gave him the gavel must now acknowledge the consequences of that decision and must be held to account…no Democratic vote should be cast for Dustin Burrows for Speaker of the Texas House in the next speaker election.”
Reporter Kayla
Guo in the Texas
Tribune reported today:
Texas
Democratic Party Chair Kendall Scudder is calling on members of his party in
the state House to drop their support of Republican Speaker Dustin Burrows, who
won the gavel with mostly Democratic support last legislative session over an
insurgent candidate favored by the hard-right.
In a nod
to the wave of conservative policies Burrows subsequently green-lit, Scudder
authored a resolution “condemning the Shameful Leadership of Speaker Dustin
Burrows and Declaring No Future Democratic Support for His Speakership.” The
measure was submitted in March to the Dallas County Democratic Party, Scudder’s
home base, and is set to be considered by the broader state party at its
convention next month.

Fertitta to aquire Caesars in nearly $18 billion deal
From the
Las Vegas Review Journal:
Billionaire
businessman Tilman Fertitta is expanding his hospitality empire by taking over
a U.S. casino giant.
Fertitta
Entertainment Inc. is acquiring Caesars Entertainment Inc. in an all-cash deal
announced Thursday valued at $17.6 billion, which includes roughly $5.7 billion
in equity value and an assumption of nearly $11.9 billion of Caesars’
outstanding debt.
Caesars
shareholders will receive $31 per share, a 49 percent premium over the
company’s closing price on Feb. 25, the day before reports of a possible buyout
began circulating. Caesars’ board approved the agreement and is urging
shareholders to sign off, saying the premium offers “compelling” value. The
deal, which is subject to regulatory approval in each jurisdiction where
Caesars operates, would create one of the largest domestic gaming companies.
